THIS TIME OF YEAR

An onion in my window? Yes! Many times we have to be CREATIVE when gardening. In my monthly blog I’ll be giving you creative gardening ideas and tips. Invite your friends to join you and get creative every month. More about that onion a little further down.

Its finally here! Fall is upon us and while I can appreciate all of the seasons for different reasons, I love how the fall leaves change color and the holidays are upon us. This is the time of year where the beauty and fullness of our gardens God blesses us with aren’t so pretty anymore and there’s cleanup to be done. Take a moment and listen to my song This Time Of Year, written by Richard Leigh.

“THIS TIME OF YEAR” JODY LYNN, ROCKIN” BLUES CHRISTMAS CD

As a result of the change in weather, I woke up to my tomato plants frozen so I had to pick the last of them at the green stage. I placed them in a bucket and will ripen them slowly as we need them by adding one to the kitchen window for light. Now you can eat them green, as fried green tomatoes, but some people can have tummy troubles so just beware of that.

As the focus is taken off of the busy days of gardening, I tend to dream and organize in my brain how I will do things differently or the same for the following year. There are things we can do to prepare ahead of time and I look forward to sharing some ideas in future blogs.

In these blog posts I will be sharing with you gardening in a creative way. No garden is the same even if we plant the same things. From different climates to different soils and design, the commonality is a God given desire to grow our own foods, flowers, and herbs.

CREATIVE GARDENING

This time of year is a great time to start a creative garden in your kitchen window or where there’s a window with a lot of light in the kitchen. I have a greenhouse window above our kitchen sink, you can find those easily online too. You can start with growing an onion by taking a glass filled with water, I like to use a see-through type so I can see the roots grow. Place the root side of the onion in the water and soon green stalks will appear and you can clip and cook right from your kitchen window. You can also try a turnip and a beet. With a celery, you cut off the top to cook or add to a salad, then you place root side down in your glass of water and celery leaves will start to grow. Just have fun with it.

FAMILY GARDENING IN YOUR HOUSE

This is very easy to do and fun to watch things grow before your eyes. You can involve your children or grandchildren and learn as you grow. You can do this with a beet and grow the greens for juicing, celery and more. Pretty soon your window will be a variety of color and useful clippings for your cooking and spicing needs. Another way to grow a garden in your window, is to purchase herbs at your local grocery store. You can learn a lot from starting right in your kitchen for the following planting season.

  3. This is so inspiring- creative and beautiful! You need to print your onion and frame it:). My windows get minimal light – will it still work?
